How to Regain Your Health & Fitness Again or from Scratch: My Top 5 Tips

One of the best decisions I ever made in my life was to finally get back in shape after years of allowing my health to slide.

When I started my journey, I had several health issues, limited mobility, and felt frustrated with where I was.

But with small, consistent changes, I began to see improvements in my strength, flexibility, and overall well-being.

It's never too late to take charge of your health and fitness, whether you're just getting started or have been away for a while. Just look at me. I started when I was 70! So I’m living proof that it’s truly never too late to start, and if I did it, so can you!

Now, I’m here to help you do the same. These tips will help you on the right path if you are wondering how to start training again.

1. Start Slowly

The most important thing when starting to train again (or for the first time) is to ease into it. You don’t have to push yourself too hard or fast. Start with lighter exercises, such as walking, stretching, or easy bodyweight exercises, like squats, a plank, or glute bridges. The goal is to get moving consistently and gradually increase your activity level as your body adjusts. The journey is about progress, not perfection.

2. Focus on Mobility and Flexibility

Mobility and flexibility are key to staying active and preventing injury. So, before you start any workout, be sure to properly warm up with stretches or mobility exercises. This will loosen up your joints and muscles, helping you move better during your workout. Improving your flexibility also makes daily activities easier and enhances overall movement.

3. Prioritize Strength Training

Strength training is essential when getting back into training. Building muscle will help you feel stronger while protecting your bones and enhancing your balance. Begin with light weights or resistance bands and focus on good form. Strength training is all about consistency, so think of lifting heavier over time, not overnight.

4. Fuel Your Body with Protein

One of the most important parts of getting back into training is making sure your nutrition is on point. Protein is especially key for muscle recovery and growth. I always make sure to include a good source of protein with every meal to help support my workouts and overall health. Take me, for instance; eating enough protein every day has made a huge difference in how I feel and how well I recover after exercise.

5. Be Mindful of Your Form

Good form is key when starting again, especially with strength training. Focusing on technique will help you avoid injury and get the most out of each movement. Take your time, practice the exercises, and don’t hesitate to ask for help if needed. Mindful training will set you up for long-term success.

Bonus Tip: Follow a Structured Program

If you’re unsure where to start, following a structured program will guide you through your workouts and keep you on track. A well-designed program will ensure you’re progressing safely and effectively.
